The Film's Odd Conclusion Detailed

Viewers who are looking for a horror-slasher movie that offers mindless entertainment while eliciting cringes, it's likely Bone Lake is on your interest. This new chilling feature from filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan debuted in theaters on the third of October with an ridiculous concept and a evocative label to match.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the conclusion of Bone Lake.

A Mix of Humor and Terror

Given the title like Bone Lake and an initial moments featuring individuals running stark naked through the woods—only to be hit with a bow in vulnerable spots—it's safe to assume there's ample humor in the film. Additionally, the final scenes, which show the main couple looking worse for wear yet chuckling madly side by side, have a feeling of grim amusement.

One would have to seek out a cause to chuckle over, also, if you endured what Diego and Sage face in Bone Lake. A duo full of partnership troubles from the beginning—lack of communication, unfulfilling intimacy, an disproportionate load of financial responsibility, and more—their connection is strained when a second pair, the character Will and the character Cin, gatecrash their love-filled retreat.

A Dark Change

Seemingly at the start to be a contrast of opposites between the two pairs—Diego and Sage are clumsy and blue-collar, whereas Will and Cin have a wealthy, luxurious existence and seem to be being intimate on every surface possible—becomes sinister as the weekend unfolds. Will and Cin play on Sage and Diego's insecurities in their relationship. They spread lies and rumors about the opposite pair, stating to know about an affair and further conflicts.

These anxieties explode in the biggest way imaginable when Sage and Diego find out that Will and Cin are not simply here at Bone Lake by mistake: they possess it and have been attracting pairs to the estate in order to coax them to cheat on their significant others. For what purpose? As Will and Cin are truly siblings. Following their incestuous affair was found out by their family and they were split apart against their will, they decided to take revenge on everyone else (including their parents). Given that the society condemned them only for loving who they want, then they'll fight back at the society. Will and Cin's goal is to show a reflection to all the duos they finally end up eliminating, in an effort to prove that their bond is no less real (or illegitimate) as the affection of these other couples they try to split.

Surprising Resilience

Yet, what Will and Cin don't take into account is that Diego and Sage, despite their failure to talk with one another, deeply value and cherish each other. It just took having a killer pair try to break them up and take their lives to understand it. If that sounds grim, it is not shown that way. Bone Lake's mood is closer to satire than actual fear.

The film finishes with Sage and Diego working together to escape Cin and Will's deadly plans. Notably is that while, at the outset of the feature, you perceive a deep abyss in the relationship between Diego and Sage in contrast to Cin and Will, by the conclusion, Bone Lake reverses it upside down. Cin and Will split up to pursue Diego and Sage, but Diego and Sage are talking more effectively now. They team up to slay the character Will with a power tool. They after that confront the character Cin, who meets a bloody fate at the floor of Bone Lake's body of water—but only after Diego takes back the wedding ring intended for Sage that Will had taken and presented to the character Cin.

Aftermath

Following the events of their double murder, covered in bodily fluids, Diego and Sage sit together on the back of a boat. Ironically, this is the most intimate they've felt since the outset of the story, now that all their romantic problems have been exposed for each of them to witness, and all they have left are their beaten and wounded selves. As if to reinforce their new closeness and intimate understanding of one another, Diego moves closer to put the wedding ring on the character Sage's finger and, when she looks to examine it in the sunlight, the couple begin to laugh.

One can easily to understand the reason: When, Will asked for marriage to the character Cin, it was a picturesque, affectionate instant. However, when the character Diego repeats the act for the character Sage, they've only escaped from a brutal nightmare. But still, Diego's proposal to Sage is free from lies, only the awareness that they've emerged from the most horrific event of their lives and, despite everything, they still wish to pass the rest of their life with each other.

Director's Insight

But, as director Mercedes Bryce Morgan clarifies, the conclusion doesn't necessarily mean a perfect future for Sage and Diego.

"When you experience that situation with a partner where you go through a murderous bloodbath, how do you recover from that? What do you do as a individual? And so I wanted to capture all of the moments there together where it's this elation of 'thank goodness' and 'have we obtained what we've dreamed of, but what on earth occurred? What the fuck do we do at this point?' Plus that sinking in of the situation of 'how does this affect for us {now|today|from
