England's First-Choice Batsmen Skip Day-Night Practice Game

The English primary batters chose to skip a pink-ball practice game in the capital, even after a devastating defeat in the opening Ashes Test in Perth.

England were beaten in under two days in the first Test, creating an 11-day gap ahead of the second pink-ball Test in Queensland.

The break presented the option for players to participate in the England Lions 48-hour day-night fixture against a invitational side in the capital on Saturday and Sunday.

Instead, only pace bowlers one bowler and another bowler, plus batsman a young player – none of whom featured in the first Test – are set to go to join the Lions.

Sources suggest that none of the Perth XI asked to play in the capital fixture.

Former England Star Calls Decision "Strange"

When we heard the team were considering dispatching players to Canberra for the development squad match, we assumed they would send players requiring match time.

Ex- England paceman and lead analyst continued:

England must take charge of how they prepare and their performances on the field. They are responsible for doing everything possible of winning the Ashes. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

Lost Chance for Day-Night Practice

This match against the Prime Minister's XI is a tradition for visiting teams to Australia.

England have played in the game in previous series in Australia, but it was not from their plans this time because of a possible tight turnaround to Brisbane had the first match gone the full duration.

The flight from Perth to Canberra requires almost four hours, and a additional two-hour journey from Canberra and Brisbane.

However, given the first Test was completed in just two days – marking the first 48-hour Ashes Test in over a century – the thought of sending some of the batsmen to Canberra appeared to make sense.

Batting Struggles in First Test

  • The tourists were bowled out in both innings in Perth in under 67.3 overs.
  • Not since the early 1900s has the team faced so few balls in losing a Test.
  • Each of the skipper and former captain Joe Root failed to reach double figures in both innings.
  • The opener became only the fourth English opener to record a duck in both innings in an Ashes match.

The side had just a single warm-up match before the first Test, meaning the game in the capital could have offered valuable time in the middle.

Rare Day-Night Challenge Ahead

Furthermore, the development game provided practice using the day-night ball, as England due to play a rare pink-ball Test.

England have lost five of their 7 previous day-nighters, while the hosts have won 13 from 14.

In pace bowler Mitchell Starc, who claimed 10 wickets in Perth, Australia have the best day-night specialist in the game.

Of England's probable line-up in Brisbane, gloveman Jamie Smith and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are yet to experience a first-class match using a day-night ball, and Brydon Carse has played only one.

Team Management Position

Questioned after the Perth match whether the team would change their plans and send squad members to Canberra, captain Ben Stokes remained firm in refusing.

This question has come up repeatedly, that was the method a long time ago. We prepare incredibly well and work incredibly hard every day we get the opportunity.

Head coach the coach seemed to leave the door open when he stated:

We need to determine the advantages and disadvantages. We're not married to a fixed plan currently, but we'll work it out soon.

McCullum continued that he was "sure" a batsman would be allowed to participate in Canberra if he wanted to.

Criticism from Former Captain

Speaking recently, ex-skipper a well-known figure said it would be "unprofessional" to decline the opportunity to participate in Canberra.

How could it hurt playing two days of cricket using the pink ball under lights?

Vaughan continued:

I can't be so old school to propose that by playing cricket they could become a little bit better?

The approach I'd take would be, there's a day-night two-day game, you go and grab it, go and take it, participate fully and give yourself the optimal preparation.

England are scheduled to fly to Queensland midweek and do not plan to practice before the start of the week. Exists the possibility of an additional training session on Sunday.
